His First Year:  The long, slow process of recovery

Your time of being a care-provider is over.

But the journey you have been on is not.

In many ways this part of the journey is just as important as having been a care-provider. Just as most men will find themselves somewhat unprepared for the role of being a long-term care-giver to someone with dementia, they will also likely find themselves adrift and uncertain at the end of that intense period of their life. Seeing how we went through the process of decompression and re-integration may help. Do not take this as a script of what you should do. Only accept it as a map of what we did.

This is a much more straight-forward memoir, and all the entries are in actual chronological order over the span of a single year. You may not believe that it will take that long to recover. Chances are, it will take even longer. For both John and Jim, a year wasn’t the end of the journey. Writing this book in some ways meant extending the time necessary for recovery, but it also helped to bring it to a more satisfying conclusion.
